TUAS UNDERSEA CABLE TUNNEL

Specification requirements on the concrete encompassed numerous high performance criteria, ranging from temperature control, low w/c ratio and high slumps on fresh concrete to high early strengths, low permeability and high durability on hardened concrete.

High Slag Portland Blast Furnace Cement (HSPBFC), with a fixed proportion of 30% Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and 70% Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) was used to reduce heat of hydration of thick sections and to provide better marine durability characteristics especially with regards to chloride and sulphate attacks.

The tunnel was completed in 1998 and the tunnel owner Singapore Power Group, had commended that they have not encountered any serious problem with the tunnel. The tunnel is dry and there has been no water seepage.

An estimated 23,520 tons of VCEM GGBS was used in this project.

RANTEMBE DAM PROJECT

The Rantembe Dam Project involved the construction of thick concrete sections and submerged structures. Concrete used to make such structures must fulfill stringent temperature and durability requirements. These are- control of the temperature rise in concrete which reduces the peak temperature and thermal cracks; prevention against the corrosion of steel bars by controlling the intrusion of chloride ions and prevention against sulphate attacks.

After the consultant’s in-depth study, SsangYong High Slag Portland Blastfurnace Cement, P4246, was concluded to possess good peak temperature reduction, better consistency, setting time and strength development, thus meeting the stringent specifications.

In addition, P4246 was found to be superior in terms of product attributes and quality when compared with other international slag cement suppliers from
Belgium, Germany and Japan, etc. The project was constructed during year 1987 to 1989.
